The Life of the Author: Alexander Pope

FROM SATIRE TO ENDURING PHRASES: UNDERSTANDING POPE IN HIS TIME AND OURS Few writers have left such a lasting imprint on everyday English as Alexander Pope. His words-"to err is human," "hope springs eternal,"-have traveled far beyond their eighteenth-century origins to become part of our cultural vocabulary. Yet the life behind these enduring phrases was as complex and compelling as the works themselves. The Life of the Author: Alexander Pope uncovers the man behind the lines, situating him within the vibrant, often volatile world of early modern Britain. In this accessible and engaging account, Glynis Ridley explores how Pope's poetry, prose, and correspondence reflected the cultural, political, and intellectual forces of his age. Each chapter pairs biography with context, revealing how a Catholic outsider became the most celebrated poet of his time and how his biting satires earned both fame and fierce enemies. Ridley also offers readers a framework for approaching eighteenth-century poetry, guiding them through Pope's craftsmanship and the historical circumstances that shaped his art. The Life of the Author: Alexander Pope is an essential resource for undergraduate and graduate students of English literature, poetry, and cultural history. It is also ideal for courses on eighteenth-century studies, satire, and the history of literary forms within English, history, and interdisciplinary humanities programs.
