In de jaren dertig gebouwd ter preventie van besmettelijke ziekten, werd het rijksmonumentale complex Quarantaine-Inrichting Beneden Heijplaat in Rotterdam in 1979 in gebruik genomen door kunstenaars.

Dit boek is een eerbetoon aan de kunst en cultuur in de QI en een pleidooi voor het behoud van atelier- en woonruimten voor kunstenaars in de veranderende stad. Het belicht de grote diversiteit van de projecten die in vier decennia zijn ontwikkeld en de betekenis van de QI als creatieve productieplaats.

Jarenlang was het groene schiereilandje een speelbal in de ontwikkeling van de Rotterdamse Haven en in 2024 moesten de kunstenaars het QI-terrein uiteindelijk verlaten. Met dit boek als blijvend monument willen de schrijvers het belang van culturele broedplaatsen voor de identiteit van Rotterdam benadrukken.

Built in the 1930s to prevent infectious diseases, the nationally listed Beneden Heijplaat Quarantine Facility in Rotterdam began to be used by artists in 1979. This book is a tribute to the art and culture within QI and a plea for the preservation of the studio and living spaces for artists in the changing city.

It highlights the great diversity of the projects developed over four decades and the significance of QI as a creative hub. For years, the green peninsula was a pawn in the development of the Port of Rotterdam, and in 2024 the artists were finally forced to leave the QI site.

With this book as a lasting monument, the authors aim to emphasize the importance of cultural incubators for Rotterdam''s identity.
