Omschrijving HARRIE GERRITZ - SCULPTURES

---

In his bundle ofessays Ver von huis (published by De Bezige Bij, 2003), Cyrille Offermans writes about his friend, the painter: ''Farms, towers, castles, churches: they must once have been beacons in their environment, point of reference for travellers, junction ofroads.''

Offermans wonders if Gerritz did long for a grip of the past. He didn''t: ''What attracted him to those buildings was the flip side of the gaudy obtrusiveness that so opposed to him today: their quiet, distinguished anonymity, their austere, unadorned forms as natural as the course of a river or the stope in a reddish-brown Tuscan field.''

In addition to the Land of Maas and Waal Harrie Gerritz also finds his inspiration elsewhere, especially in countries such as Tunisia and Malta, where he regularly stayed. His sculptures in wood and bronze show this; some of them seem to be reminders of construction in these countries.
